SPRINGFIELD - Leland Winslow Griffith of Springfield died at 8:10 a.m. Saturday, July 17, 2010, at Regency Nursing Care Residence.
He was born June 29, 1923, in Stuttgart, Arkansas, to Edwin and Cornelia Hetrick Griffith. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and two brothers.
Leland was a lifelong resident of Springfield. Leland was a graduate of Feitshans High School and served in the U. S. Army during WWII. He was the recipient of the Victory Medal, European African Middle Eastern Theatre Ribbon with one Silver Battle Star. Leland worked for Fiat Allis as an engineer/draftsman and retired at 57 after 30 years of service. He was a member of AARP, American Legion NCPSSM and Fiat Allis retirees. He enjoyed dancing, golfing, taking care of the home he built and maintaining his yard.
He is survived by two sisters, Grace Barrington and Leoda Birnbaum, both of Springfield, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A visitation will be held from 4-6 p.m. on Tuesday, July 20, 2010, at Staab Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held Wednesday July 21, 2010, at 11 a.m. at Staab Funeral Home, with Reverend Brent Mitchell officiating. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery, where military honors will be conducted. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or the charity of the Donor's Choice.
